Meet Our Vendors! >> Bloomfield Farms

Meet Our Vendors! is an ongoing series where you’ll be able to get a sneak peek of who you’ll see in November! Feel free to leave comments and questions–for us and for the vendor–about products, practices, and anything else that’s on your mind.

If you’re looking for high-quality mixes and spices made in a kosher facility and completely dedicated gluten and nut free environment, you don’t have to go much farther than visiting Bloomfield Farms! Driven by a family diagnosis resulting in living a gluten and egg-free life, founders Sue and Dan Sutherland have created a successful line of mixes (brownies, pizza, and more!) and spices.

We’re excited to have them at the FACCWDW, and here’s a little bit more of what goes on behind the scenes at Bloomfield Farms headquarters.

1. What’s the craziest/funniest/most memorable time you’ve experienced with a Bloomfield Farms fan?

We go to a lot of food allergy expos, and we usually give away samples to the hungry attendees. There was one gentleman who liked our cookies so much he kept swinging by our booth and grabbing another one. The funniest part was, he was acting all sneaky about it, trying to grab the goodies off the corner of the table when he thought no one was looking. We wanted to tell him to take as much as he wanted, but it was too funny watching his not-so-sneaky antics!

2. If you could create a Disney-inspired pizza using Bloomfield Farms pizza dough, what would it be?

Maybe something a bit exotic, like a Chinese-inspired schezuan chicken pizza for Mulan and her fellow warriors. Or a hearty winter pizza with potatoes and a sheep’s milk cheese, something that Merida from Brave might like to eat. And it definitely would be shaped like Mickey!

3. All bakers have disasters in the kitchen that go along with a funny story — what’s one of yours?

Oh wow, it’s hard to just pick one! Product development is always a LOT of trial and error; we probably went through 500 iterations of our cornbread mix before we got it perfect. But the first time we tested it, it tasted like cardboard.

4. How did the idea for launching your allergy-friendly company come about?

Sue and Dan Sutherland, the owners of the company, have a granddaughter that was diagnosed with an egg allergy and gluten sensitivity when she was very young. They were troubled by the fact that she couldn’t eat birthday cake or pizza like the other kids, and surprised by the limited number of great tasting, safe, gluten free products that were available to her. Their family has a long history of milling high-quality flours out of Bardstown, KY, so they decided to open a brand new, 100% dedicated facility down the road and make their own gluten free baking mixes. And here we are!

5. We know there must be something new in the works at Bloomfield Farms… what’s in development? Any secrets to give away?

Well, we won’t give away any secrets, but we’re always looking to improve and expand our product line. We’re definitely growing fast, and can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store for us!

Meet Our Vendors! >> Base Culture

Meet Our Vendors! is an ongoing series where you’ll be able to get a sneak peek of who you’ll see in November! Feel free to leave comments and questions–for us and for the vendor–about products, practices, and anything else that’s on your mind.

If you’re looking for pure, all-natural treats, our Bibbidi-Bobbidi Bronze Sponsor, Base Culture, has you covered. Base Culture’s founder, Jordann Windschauer, was on the hunt for Paleo-friendly ways to indulge her sweet tooth, which grew into a passionate product line with quality ingredients to create sweet treats that everyone will enjoy.

We asked her a little more about what goes on behind the scenes, and here’s what she has to say!

Planning a Disney Trip with a Special Diet: Overlooked Disney Gems For Special Diets

Blogger Street Team member Sandra, who also goes by the moniker Gluten-Free Doll, was diagnosed with celiac disease over ten years ago. She shares her gluten-free adventure on her blog, Gluten-Free Doll, and is divulging today her top tips for the most magical table service experience!

When most people think of special dietary meals at the Walt Disney World parks and resorts, Table Service and Quick Service are the first things that come to mind. They are fantastic options! There are also many overlooked gems, which can provide safe food options as well. Disney offers several unique experiences that can accommodate special dietary requirements. As always, a quick email or phone call to Disney’s special diets team will ensure your needs can be met.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is a special ticketed event which is held on select nights in November and December. Magic Kingdom is transformed into a Christmas paradise for this event. Not to be missed attractions include: Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, Character Dance Parties and snow falling on Main Street.

In the past, Disney has provided safe options for those requiring a special diet. Complimentary treat options have included cookies that are free of nuts, as well as options which are free of gluten, dairy and sugar. Healthy alternatives such as prepackaged apple slices and juice are regularly provided at this event. Contact Disney’s special diet department by emailing them at Special.Diets@DisneyWorld.com or by calling 407-824-5967.

[Note from FACCWDW: The Christmas Party is being held on dates that include the evening of November 22nd!]

Mickey’ Not So Scary Halloween Party

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is another special ticketed event. It runs from 7:00pm – midnight, on select nights from September to October 31st. As the event title states, this party is not scary and great for families! It offers something for everyone – parades, fireworks, dancing, trick-or-treating, and character interaction. Let’s not forget that adults and children are invited to dress in costume for the night as well.

This is a special ticketed event and is well worth the money in my opinion. When I attended, I went to City Hall in Magic Kingdom about an hour before the event officially kicked off. There, I was able to get a special treat bag, full of pumpkin shaped gluten free chocolates. A lot of the treats handed out by cast members are gluten free as well. Just be sure to check all labels, and when in doubt go without.

Special Occasion Cakes

With advance notice, most Disney restaurants can provide a custom cake! All you have to do is call (407)827-2253 to reach the Disney cake hotline. Make sure to advise them of any dietary restrictions and they will work with you to provide a spectacular celebration cake. You can arrange to have the cake brought out at the end of a Walt Disney World Table Service meal, or you can have it delivered to your WDW resort hotel room. Prices are not cheap and do vary, depending on the customization you choose. Regardless of price, your cake is sure to be breathtaking and delicious!

Splitsville

Splitsville is a bowling alley, which is located in Downtown Disney. During the day, the bowling alley caters to families and children. Once 8:00pm hits, its adults only (21+). The alley has a full service restaurant that offers 16 mouth-watering options gluten free options on the menu. Check out a few of those items below.

  • Spicy Fajita Rice Bowl
  • Seared Ahi Tuna,
  • Turkey BLT Salad
  • Blackened Mahi Mahi with Spicy Voodoo Shrimp
  • Grilled Salmon with Mango Chutney, fresh broccoli and sushi rice

You can even order a gluten free pizza.

[Note from FACCWDW: We’re having a special Extra Magic event at Splitsville on Sunday, November 23rd, complete with a customized gluten-free menu, unlimited bowling and billiards, and lots of fun! You can grab your tickets here.]

Pirates & Pals

This Pirate themed boat cruise will not disappoint. It runs from the Contemporary Resort and costs about $59.00 for adults and $34.00 for kids. Captain Hook, and Smee greet guests. Your Pirate Hosts – Patch and his twin brother Patch will ensure a laughing good time.

The boat sails on Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon. You will be treated to fireworks and the Electric Water Pageant, along with Pirate tales and Disney trivia. There is also a special surprise at the end of the cruise.

When making a reservation for the Pirates & Pals Firework Cruise, have the cast member make note of any special dietary requirements. Doing this will make sure that prepackaged snacks are available to meet your dietary needs.

Water Parks

Disney’s Water Parks are another great option for fun. Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach have several Counter Service locations which can accommodate special dietary requirements. Sorry, no Table Service here. You will find typical fast food staples such as burgers, chicken tenders and hot dogs. Another option is to reserve a cabana (for a fee). The cabanas provide more than just a shady place to relax. They are set up for six guests and come with a locked locker, cooler, all day drink mugs (1 per guest), bottled water and an attendant. You can reserve in advance by calling 407-939-7529.

We are so excited to have recently announced our Meals and Special Experiences available at the Food Allergy & Celiac Convention. With a goal is that all families can find gluten free products they can trust, the family-built company with three generations of celiac disease personally knows the severe reaction one can have if cross-contaminated with compromised products.

If you’re joining us for Brer’s Breakfast Buffet, you’ll get to experience GF Harvest in a fun and topping-filled hot oatmeal bar, and enjoy some goodies to take away, as well. Here’s a little more about the folks behind the company and why they do what they do, and we look forward to having them a part of the event!

Did you know that this week’s Random Act of Magic Monday is featuring our favourite gluten-free oats company and a Brer’s Breakfast Buffet Bonus? Even better, it’s still going on and lasts until THIS THURSDAY! Enter now!

Calling all teens and college students with food allergies!

When it comes to creating a unique and fun experience for teens and college students at FACCWDW, we knew that we there was no one better to help create some Disney magic than Kathleen Shannon. In addition to being a huge Disney World fan, Kathleen is also a college student with multiple food allergies and tons of passion for special diets advocacy and awareness. As a Biology and Forensic Sciences double-major at North Carolina State University, Kathleen hopes to become a dietitian in the future. She works with her school’s dining and nutrition department to assess allergy-friendly options on campus and has a blog (“Allergy Friendly at NC State”) dedicated to just that. She’s also an Udi’s Ambassador, founder and president of the NC State Food Allergy Support Group and has a personal blog called Soul Food. She’s sharing with us some more information about our teen/college area at FACCWDW! Take it away, Kathleen!calling special diets at WDW

Are you a teen or college student currently living with food allergies? If so, stop what you’re doing and register for the 1st annual Food Allergy & Celiac Convention at Walt Disney World and join in on the fun on November 22nd!

Managing food allergies can be tricky enough, but sometimes for people our age, it can be a big source of stress. As a college student with several food allergies, allergy blogger, and on-campus food allergy advocate, I understand this firsthand, and I’m excited to share the wealth at the FACCWDW!

The event is already featuring a ton of Extra Magic, including our speakers (with Disney Chefs), vendors, special events, and more (the whole schedule is here). I’m looking forward to hosting an area devoted to teens and college students, which will include:

  • Interactive group discussion on related topics, such as starting college with allergies, allergies as part of your social life, and eating allergy-friendly on the go
  • Custom handouts, both from our vendors and other resources
  • Sign up sheets for ways to be involved in your community, like the Udi’s Ambassador program
  • On-going giveaways throughout the day — check the program!
  • A chance to give feedback and personal experiences for a special surprise to be revealed after the convention!

We’ve also created a FACCWDW Teen/College Group 2014 on Facebook so that we can get to know each other before the convention. It will be a great way to meet others, share information and advice, and bond over two of the best things: food and Disney!

Be on the lookout for more updates on this exciting part of the convention. I can’t wait to meet you all in November!
