When it comes to creating a unique and fun experience for teens and college students at FACCWDW, we knew that we there was no one better to help create some Disney magic than Kathleen Shannon. In addition to being a huge Disney World fan, Kathleen is also a college student with multiple food allergies and tons of passion for special diets advocacy and awareness. As a Biology and Forensic Sciences double-major at North Carolina State University, Kathleen hopes to become a dietitian in the future. She works with her school’s dining and nutrition department to assess allergy-friendly options on campus and has a blog (“Allergy Friendly at NC State”) dedicated to just that. She’s also an Udi’s Ambassador, founder and president of the NC State Food Allergy Support Group and has a personal blog called Soul Food. She’s sharing with us some more information about our teen/college area at FACCWDW! Take it away, Kathleen!
Are you a teen or college student currently living with food allergies? If so, stop what you’re doing and register for the 1st annual Food Allergy & Celiac Convention at Walt Disney World and join in on the fun on November 22nd!
Managing food allergies can be tricky enough, but sometimes for people our age, it can be a big source of stress. As a college student with several food allergies, allergy blogger, and on-campus food allergy advocate, I understand this firsthand, and I’m excited to share the wealth at the FACCWDW!
The event is already featuring a ton of Extra Magic, including our speakers (with Disney Chefs), vendors, special events, and more (the whole schedule is here). I’m looking forward to hosting an area devoted to teens and college students, which will include:
- Interactive group discussion on related topics, such as starting college with allergies, allergies as part of your social life, and eating allergy-friendly on the go
- Custom handouts, both from our vendors and other resources
- Sign up sheets for ways to be involved in your community, like the Udi’s Ambassador program
- On-going giveaways throughout the day — check the program!
- A chance to give feedback and personal experiences for a special surprise to be revealed after the convention!
We’ve also created a FACCWDW Teen/College Group 2014 on Facebook so that we can get to know each other before the convention. It will be a great way to meet others, share information and advice, and bond over two of the best things: food and Disney!
Be on the lookout for more updates on this exciting part of the convention. I can’t wait to meet you all in November!
